Structural Reliability of the Russky Bridge is Monitored from Space

The world’s largest cable-stayed bridge across the Eastern Bosphorus Strait in Vladivostok is equipped with an automated precision monitoring system, which allows a continuous holistic health monitoring of the giant installation to be conducted using simultaneously two satellite-based global positioning systems, GLONASS and GPS.

“The Bridge to Russky Island is located in a very tough climate zone, which is defined by the seashore and gusty storm winds. The cable-stayed giant calls for special attention because of the unique engineering features as well as safety and operational reliability requirements. When the project was built, a holistic automated monitoring system which integrates more than 500 state-of-the-art sensors was designed and put in place. The system allows for real-time monitoring of bridge health parameters and also the weather conditions and the wind loads,” says Gennady Shkuropatov, Director of the Special Branch of OJSC USK MOST in Vladivostok. “Using special devices installed on the bridge, which receive satellite system signals, we can also conduct the precision monitoring of 3-D positions of all elements of the giant installation that connects the mainland to Russky Island.

A huge display board in the Control Center that monitors the bridge over the Eastern Bosphorus Strait is also called a video wall.” Numerous displays and monitors that occupy the entire display in real time show all incoming data such as visibility, wind velocity, roadway temperature, traction coefficient, water film thickness, lane traffic intensity, traffic flow density, and many others.
“The totality of the data determines the actions taken by the 24-hour control team. More specifically, safe speed limits are set up for traffic via the bridge, based on the acquired data,” says Artem Efremenko, Chief Engineer of the Automated Control System. “All drivers can get the necessary information from the billboards that are installed at the bridge entry on both sides – on the Nazimov Peninsula end and on the Russky Island end.”

After the giant cable-stayed bridge has been put in service, the innovative monitoring system integrated a variety of sensor types, including GLONASS /GPS receivers, tachymeters, inclinometers, seismometers, which provide the precise position monitoring and monitor health monitoring of the structural members. Color coding is used to show the bridge health. Precision sensors are mounted on the pylons, stay cables, reinforced concrete girders and steel stiffening girders. The green light on the screen means that everything is OK; yellow warns of the approaching alarm level in the preset range; red is the alarm level. However, only green light has been there all the time since the moment the bridge was put in service.

“During the period of observation, winds of up to 21-25 meters per second and even stronger occurred, which is the speed that calls for putting in place restrictions or even close down the traffic for the sake of safety of the drivers and vehicles,” says Sergey Safronov, Engineer of the Automated Control System. “However, even with strong winds, the structures have never been close to the warning level.
Therefore, the period of operation confirmed to the full extent that the design, process, and engineering concepts that were adopted when the unique bridge to Russky Island was designed and built were correct.”

Russian National Bicycle Race Started on the Bridge over the Eastern Bosphorus Strait

The Bridge to the Russky Island over the Eastern Bosphorus Strait is again a bicyclist gathering place. The Russian National Competition was started on September 14 in Vladivostok. The racers have to ride for about 10 days covering a distance of about 400 kilometers all around the region.

Fifty sportsmen from the entire country have come to the Russky Island. The race started over the sea, on the unique bridge over the Eastern Bosphorus Strait in the city of Vladivostok, which is now well known in the country for its stay cable bridges.

The sportsmen were starting one after the other at one minute interval. The fastest racers will be identified after the Vladivostok stage in order to form a queue. The distance of six kilometers is a short one for bicyclists, but it is tough. One cannot afford any mistake riding over such a short distance.

There are over three hundred kilometers ahead. The racers will then ride to Nakhodka, Ussuriysk, Arseniev, Kavalerovo, and Dalnegorsk. The bicycle race in Primorie will last ten days.

Russky Bridge in Vladivostok Reopens for Private Vehicles

Traffic restrictions imposed on the bridge over the Eastern Bosphorus Strait were lifted since September 10 in Vladivostok. Any vehicle owner can now travel from the mainland to the Russky Island and back over the Russky Bridge.

The temporary restriction of traffic was imposed on the bridge over the Eastern Bosphorus Strait as a security measure to protect the heads of state and heads of government who took part in the APEC Summit. All restrictions have been lifted. The specialists emphasize that the vehicle traffic to the Russky Island can now be closed only for one reason: inclement weather conditions. More specifically, if the wind velocity is 29 meters per second, trucks will not be allowed to enter the bridge, and passenger vehicles will not be allowed to the bridge with a wind of 33 meters per second.

It should be noted that Vladivostok residents and the city guests who wanted to go to the Russky Island for recreational activities during the APEC Summit could do so by using the coastal vessels.

Vladimir Putin: “Vladivostok APEC Summit Objectives Accomplished in Full”

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Vladivostok was wrapped up. Summarizing the forum at the press conference, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that it was a success and that the forum goals have been accomplished in full. The head of state defined further development of relations with the countries that generate 55 percent of the world GDP as a priority for Russia. Vladimir Putin also expressed his gratitude to the builders and to Primorie residents for the preparation for and assistance in summit events.

The Vladivostok meeting has changed the conventional image of APEC forums because all events of this dimension have been taking place in the world largest economic centers before. The key facilities had to be built literally from scratch in the capital of Primorie. According to Vladimir Putin, the region has a huge potential for development, and great attention was given to the infrastructure projects.
“It is no accident that we decided to host the APEC Summit right here, in Vladivostok. Being a host country, we could have held the summit in Moscow, or, say, in Ekaterinburg. However, we have decided to hold it here in order to give a development impetus to the region,” explained Vladimir Putin.

Vladivostok has been stunningly transformed during preparation for the APEC Summit. About 50 large-scale projects have been built as part of the preparation for the international forum. Two giant bridges, over the Golden Horn Bay and over the Eastern Bosphorus Strait have become the logos of the city. The forum guests have used the world largest stay cable bridge to get to the Russky Island. And they were very much impressed. Even the Chinese leader, reserved Hu Jintao, was gesticulating quite visibly without concealing his admiration looking at the Russky Bridge.

Vladimir Putin was asked a question that is very important for all Primorie residents on the very first day of the summit.
“First of all, being a motorist, I would like to thank you very much for the bridges. We, the residents, have been waiting for them for a long time. Here is my question. How will financing of Primorie change after the summit has ended? Will it decrease significantly?” asked Maksim Ananiev, a representative of the city community.
“Vladivostok residents have been waiting for these bridges since the year 1903! It seems to me that the first postcards with a bridge image were issued in 1903 … They showed the bridge like people dreamed at that time, like the one that has been just built! Well, the project implementation cycles can be very protracted in Russia,” replied the President with a sense of humor. “However, if we do something, we would do something special. You can see that the bridge over the Eastern Bosphorus Strait has the world largest span over the sea. The most advanced technologies were used including space-based technologies, and the bridge has a large quantity of sensors. The bridge health is continuously monitored by satellite-based systems in real time, every second. I hope that everything will function there as it was conceived by the designers and builders.”
The President disproved the opinion that everything on the Russky Island where the APEC Summit took place was built with the only purpose of receiving the heads of government in a luxurious environment.

“We have been building this state-of-the art center for three years not only in order to receive the heads of government in a luxurious environment. I know many of them personally and, believe me, this is not what is important for them. The country leaders value the business-like atmosphere of the forum first and foremost. At the same time, we have invested hundreds of billions of rubles in the development of Vladivostok and Russky Island and in the infrastructure development and we will carry on.
